Teachers Change Lives

Good afternoon, friends, this is Pastor Don. I noticed that this week is Teacher Appreciation week. We have a number of teachers, administrative personnel, and retired teachers in our congregation and I want to say how grateful I am for all of you and for what you have contributed to students over the years and what you have given to St. Johns. I know what you do is not an easy task and often is not recognized, but it matters. It truly does.

When I think of my many teachers over the years, my mind immediately goes to a professor I had at Earlham School of Religion. Her name was Miriam Burke and I took a number of courses from her but the most life-changing was entitled: “Spiritual Preparation for Ministry.” It’s hard to put into only a few words just how indebted I am to her. I know that when I was in her class, I knew that I was seen like few other people have seen me and I was loved. She taught me the benefit of not only being seen and loved by another, but also the benefit of knowing myself and loving myself even when I feel unlovable. None of us know what it is that we actually contribute to those we teach, but I know that I was forever changed by sitting under her instruction.

In a way, we are all teachers and will always be teachers. Do not be discouraged, teachers, because you do change lives and we are better because you do what you do.

Let’s pray: God, you are the greatest teacher of all and Jesus followed in your footsteps. Thank you for that example. Amen
