Be Still in God’s Presence

Good afternoon, friends, this is Pastor Don. Mary Ann and I just came back from a trip to Cleveland and then a short three-night stay in Amish country in Holmes County.

It was such a refreshing and renewing time. There were all of the things you expect in those beautiful hills: buggies, horses, plain clothing, immaculate farms, battery powered bicycles, and good home cooking. All of that combines with those delightful people to bring an amazing sense of peace to your spirit as you make your way around those hilly, windy roads.

That sense of peace is not really an accident. I think at least in part, it stems from something very intentional on the part of the Amish people: an intentional effort to practice simplicity! They work hard at ridding themselves of practices and things that tend to unnecessarily complicate their lives so that it is harder to put God first, then family, and then the faith community.

It is so easy for clutter to accumulate in our day to day living. Clutter and complexity can keep us so entangled in things that really don’t add anything of much value to our lives. They just steal our time! I am so grateful for a people who have, for the most part, resisted good things in the committed search for the best things!

Take, for example, dedicating daily time to be still in God’s presence to listen and reflect on whatever God might have for our day! Isn’t that a practice worth more than many other things that occupy our time?

Let’s pray: Loving God, help us to honestly seek first your kingdom before things of lesser value. Amen.
