God of Mystery

Good afternoon, friends. This is Pastor Don. I don’t know whether I am a typical human being or one-of-a-kind, but I find myself pondering the questions of life and my faith on a fairly regular basis. I suppose my parents would have considered that a lack of faith, but I’ve never been able to define faith as the absence of questions or doubts. How about you? Do the oddities of life bug you sometimes so that you are sent into a spasm of unanswerable questions? I don’t understand the part of the world that seems to entertain no questions at all for any period of time. I assume they don’t understand me either.

Anyway, I’ve concluded that especially in the arena of God and faith, that God has left us with a stack of questions for which, at least for the moment, there are no provable, satisfactory answers. So, I guess, that’s where faith comes in, doesn’t it? There are those times when you have to call on your life experiences, your best insight, your best teachers, and that reliable inner voice. And then if all of that doesn’t lead you to the answers you crave, you just have to take a leap – a leap of faith – into mystery. God is, among other things, mystery. We wouldn’t want a God that we, as finite, limited creations could fully understand, would we?

So, here we are, stuck with our limitations in a world bigger than we can comprehend, and with a God who is more and greater than we can even imagine. We must settle with our unanswered question into a space where we simply say to God: We love you and follow you because of your steadfast love. For today, that is enough. We trust you.

Let’s pray: Thank you for that steadfast love even when we cannot understand your ways. Amen
