Eclipse – Mere Mortals

Good afternoon, friends. This is Pastor Don. I hope you don’t mind if I reflect a bit on the recent phenomenon of the eclipse! I have to say that I wasn’t prepared for what it was like to be right in the path of the total eclipse! Mary Ann and I set up our lawn chairs in the backyard, got out our special glasses and waited as our whole world got strangely darker and darker until the tiny sliver of a sun just disappeared altogether. The beauty of that narrow ring of light around the shadow of the moon was stunning, but the moment the sun began to appear like a flaming diamond on the ring of light was breathtaking!

The whole thing was a wonder-filled intersection of the wisdom of science and the wonder of God’s amazing universe. I was captivated, first of all, by the sheer beauty of it all! We were so privileged to be here and be able to see something so splendid! Secondly, I couldn’t help but notice the precision of it all. Science helped us to know precisely when it was going to happen and how long every step would last! And scientists were able to do that because the universe is so orderly in that way! And finally, I reflected afterwards on how tiny an event this was from the perspective of the universe itself. It drew me to a verse in Psalm 8 “When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place – what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?” Indeed!

Let’s pray: We are so amazed that you notice us and love us like you do. Amen.
