Good afternoon, friends. This is Pastor Don. When we think of the act of creation, we try to conjure up visions of time before time. A moment or an eon before there was anything – when God first acted. Words can’t contain such an experience. As the Genesis account has it, God rested after that piece of work.
Do you assume that after God’s day of rest, God simply retired? Or did God somehow get up on Monday morning like we do and go back to work? If so, what is God’s work? I believe that God never gave up the occupation of creating. God continues to create and God continues that creative work in us, in our lives, in our spiritual selves.
We are not finished. God’s creative work in us is not over as long as we are on this side of the grave. Actually, I suspect that this creative work continues on the other side of the grave.
In other words, God is today working in you – shaping you – using the raw materials of your life to do a new thing in you. That makes your present situation holy and sacred. It is not a tragic mistake. You are God’s handiwork – a work in process. Like someone said many years ago: “Be patient, God is not finished with me yet!”
Paul said to the church at Philippi: “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” So, however negative it seems to you, God sees your situation as something with divine potential – as long as you are willing to allow God to complete God’s work in you.
Let’s Pray: Today, O God, as we go about our work, help us remember that you will be working in us to complete what you started. Amen.
