A New Kind of Life

Good afternoon, friends. This is Pastor Don. I’ve been reading a spiritual memoir entitled: Called to Question: A Spiritual Memoir by Joan Chittister. It’s been very helpful to me and this morning, she reminded me of the passage in I Peter: “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.” Could I rephrase that? How’s this? “A new kind of life is emerging inside of you because of how God continues to call you from within.”

Joan went on to speak of how God was birthing something inside of her that she hadn’t yet fully named. “Whatever it is,” she said, “it lurks inside fighting for breath. If I repress it, I may never be real, never be true.” Later she added: “We are never at home with ourselves until we have come to be what we know ourselves to be inside… We are each called to something. Discovering where it is that God will break out in us in full becomes the major task in life.”

I think it is both very exciting and a bit frightening to contemplate what it is that is trying to be born inside us and then to consider what it would mean for that to become a part of our everyday lives! That emerging new life is what is most real! And it is something that is never quite complete as long as we are alive.

Does that resonate with you today in some way?

Let’s Pray: God of new life, please enliven us to see a glimpse of what could be if we only would say “yes” to your gentle movement. Amen
