Good afternoon, friends. It is so encouraging when someone makes a comment after a sermon that lets me know that person has been doing some real thinking about the topic of the morning. Sunday, someone came up to me after my sermon where I had spoken on the topic of being a follower of Jesus who lives as one “Under Orders.” This person said: “It’s the specifics of those orders that are hard for me. How do I know exactly what my orders are?” That is so right on target for me, too. I wish it were as simple as reading a typed one- page document.
The answer to that question is the work of a life-time. Oversimplifying the answer, I would say that to truly know your calling means you must give yourself to continually know the person and message of Jesus better and better. “What would Jesus do?” is more than a cute phrase – it is a life’s work.
And secondly, as hard as it may be for you, I believe that you can’t know the heart and will of Jesus without learning to be quiet and still – and learn to live in his presence throughout the day. Back in 1895 Brother Lawrence wrote a beautiful little book entitled: The Practice of the Presence of God. It’s still available and a great place to start to learn to integrate the still small voice of God into our busy lives. So much has been said and written about learning to be present to God’s voice. It is like any art form. It takes practice, patience, and persistence.
LET’S PRAY – O God, your quiet voice is so hard for us busy people to hear. Give us the gift of learning to hear you beneath the noise. Amen
